Hatrack River (Tales of Alvin Maker, #1-3) - Orson Scott Card I read these books (it's an omnibus SFBC volume of the first three novels) toward the end of my "Orson Scott Card" period (which began with Ender's Game and ended with the almost unreadable Pastwatch).

I did like Alvin and I particularly liked Card's evocation of an alternate American history where the indigenes had some chance against the White Man.
