The Black Company - Glen Cook I picked up a used SF Book Club omnibus edition of the first three novels in a bookstore in DC and fell in love with the narrator, Croaker (who was an alter-ego), and (like him) Lady.

The Books of the North (as the first three are now known) are Cook at the top of his form. The subsequent Books of the South are not as compelling (though still good reads); the best still being told from Croaker's point of view. And the denouement of the final book, Soldiers Live, would be a dream come true...
